When a child struggles with reading, the cause is almost never effort — and it is never about how much they care. It is nearly always a small set of foundational skills that never became automatic: hearing the individual sounds inside words, connecting those sounds to letters, recognizing word parts quickly enough that reading stops being exhausting. Classroom accommodations work around the problem. The problem itself stays until those skills are rebuilt.
